Works In Progress

2022- @ Willapa

The Salty Farmer consults for a 300 acre family-run farm in THE West Coast’s most rooted shellfishing estuary. Here he is advising on farm growth, making headway on a wet storage facility, and pushing ahead another proof-of-concept of a hatchery + nursery model for Olympia + Pacific oysters. On the current trajectory, this would be his 7th hatchery build up.

2025- @ St. Paul Island

The Salty Farmer leads design, install, and annual production as a part of the AKCRRAB team. Because harvest of the Red & Blue King Crab has declined in The Bering Sea, Trident Seafoods is loaning 1,600 sq ft of the world’s largest crab processing facility to be the first US-based commercial Red King Crab hatchery. Brooding Red King Crab release eggs to be hatched, and larvae reared and settled on a diet of Artemia + phytoplankton. Husbandry continues until their release into the Bering Sea under the AKCRRAB field program.

 2024 @ Marrowstone Island

The Salty Farmer designed and built a remote Abalone quarantine & hatchery facility for the importation of the endangered Pinto Abalone. This small but powerful 300 sq ft space is dedicated to the creation of distinct familial crosses. Once the new generations of abalone are established & vetted, they are used in satellite production facilities around Puget Sound to repopulate the San Juans & The Strait of Juan de Fuca.

2024- @ Quilcene

The Salty Farmer breathes life into an established facility which once brought seed to farm by the millions. Prior to The Salty Farmer onboarding, it had seen a year-on-year decline of in-house seed production. Since coming on board in early 2024, the hosting organization is will reach it’s production goals of 6M 3mm singles to FLUPSY with routine consulting. The yield, growth rate, and health of seed is stark improvement from past years. All of these gains have happened without any new investment in infrastructure.

2024 @ NOAA’s NMFS Manchester

The Salty Farmer repaired a commercial FLUPSY after a season-long assault by sea lions (see pic below!). He led a team to mend the timber structure, resurface the deck, rebuild the gantry; renew the FLUPSY trough, bins, and pumps; installed new sea lion deterring hot rails, plumbing, and storage infrastructure under the guidance of NOAA. The team met a demanding timeline to enable production, restoration, and research for the 2024 growing season.
